Benjamin, a quick context_processor to throw the recent entries onto the request context and @register.simple_tag would have handled this very simply in Django just as well.

Yeah; but for some reason that seems more difficult to me than something simple and universal like class inheritance. I am starting to feel very limited by Django's function based views.
